~ Piano no Mori ~

- The perfect world of KAI Anime Movie -

Piano no Mori is a tranquil tale about two boys from very different upbringings. On one hand you have Kai, born as the son of a prostitute, who's been playing the abandoned piano in the forest near his home ever since he was young. And on the other you have Shuuhei, practically breast-fed by the piano as the son of a family of prestigious pianists. Yet it is their common bond with the piano that eventually intertwines their paths in life.

Fifth-grader Amamiya Shuuhei transfers to Moriwaki Elementary and it doesn't take long before the class bully starts picking on him. He dares Shuuhei to play a mysterious piano in the forest but the boy is rescued from the situation by classmate Ichinose Kai.

Later, Kai leads Shuuhei to the grand piano in the forest. Shuuhei can't seem to get any sound out of the instrument, and is astonished when Kai starts playing on it. He is even more amazed when Kai tells him he has never taken lessons and is musically illiterate! Inspired on by each other, the two become the best of friends and rivals as each seek to realise his potential as a top pianist.

ISSHIKI Makoto's critically-acclaimed manga series has already sold over 3.5million copies, and the movie coincides with a recent boom in classical music in Japan (no doubt helped by the popularity of Nodame no Cantabile and Japanese tenor AKIKAWA Masafumi's hit, Sen no Kaze ni Natte).

The full-length feature is produced by Mad House (Paprika, Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo) and directed by KOJIMA Masayuki (Hanada Shounen-shi, MONSTER). World-renowned pianist and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy is the film's music advisor, and will also perform for the film.

One of the things I like about this anime is its traditional manga art. The colors and the way the characters and the environment was drawn is simply beautiful. Its' very much like Tekkonkinkreet.

One thing I find interesting was to realize that Aya Ueto was the voice of Kai! Amazing, I almost couldn't recognize its her. ^^

Overall, its a warm and beautiful story.

The movie was adpated from the manga.
